ACOP Main Event Day 1b: More than a gamble

Macau is not your typical tourist destination. Most people who visit Macau are attracted to the lure of the gamble in the Las Vegas of the East, with gambling revenue comprising around 50% of the country's economy. There are over 30 casinos spread across Macau and Taipa Island including the well-known Las Vegas properties of the Wynn, Venetian and MGM.

This week we find ourselves located at the City of Dreams along the Cotai Strip. The CoD property comprises of four towers - the Hard Rock, Crown Towers and two Grand Hyatt towers. The CoD takes up over 39,000 square metres of real estate with over 550 gaming tables, 1,500 slot machines and over 20 restaurants and bars.

While that's more than enough to keep yourself busy, and there are certainly plenty of gambling opportunities, the property also offers some world-class entertainment away from the gaming tables.

Last time I was here, I was luckily enough to go along to see The House of Dancing Water which is a brilliant, world-class production that would be at home at any casino on the Las Vegas strip. There's also TABOO which I am yet to see, but according to the website it is a "seductive cabaret performance" that "explores every man and woman's deepest desires through mesmerizing performances". Sounds intriguing?

There's also a wonderful poolside area here at the Hard Rock Hotel. Anyone familiar with this chain of hotels would know that they enjoy a party and this area the perfect spot to let your hair down. There's a poolside bar, nearby beach volleyball court and a huge hot tub which is perfect to relax and unwind, day or night. And that's exactly where we'll be later tonight, with cold drink in hand, as the players and staff get to enjoy the official ACOP Welcome Party after play wraps up this evening.

We'll have more about the party for you tomorrow, but before then, we have some poker to play. Only four levels though, so shouldn't be too strenuous for us or the 100+ players that are expected to take their seats for Day 1b of the HK$100,000 Asia Championships of Poker (ACOP) Main Event. Once again there will be plenty of big name players in attendance for us to keep an eye on throughout the day. Stay locked into the PokerStars Blog as we bring you the stories on and off the felt, while the crew over at PokerNews cover all the hand action in the Live Updates section of the site.
